About

Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) is a unique approach adapted by Romanian Peace Corps volunteers in 1995. Since its creation the camp has been duplicated by Peace Corps volunteers all around the world. The camps vary in size and content but they all share a set of general principles.

With the arrival of the first Peace Corps volunteers in Rwanda since 1993, the first annual Camp GLOW Rwanda was held in the capital of Kigali in December of 2009. The five day camp proved to be a huge success with the opening ceremony being broadcast on national television, radio and newspapers. The camp was facilitated by about 15 Peace Corps health volunteers, 10 Rwandan volunteers and a total of 75 participants.

The concentration of Camp GLOW is on building leadership skills to encourage young women to become active citizens in their communities. A health focus was added to the camp in order to address the specific needs of Rwanda. The camp teaches girls an array of health topics from preventing sexually transmitted diseases and HIV, to making kitchen gardens as a way of fighting malnutrition and promoting proper nutrition.
